The Solway Coast with its sandy beaches and rocky coves is within a half hour"s drive and Loch Ken, with water sports and excellent coarse fishing, and the hills, are very close.
Castle Douglas has a swimming pool and a golf course and there are a number of other golf courses throughout the area. Game, coarse and sea fishing are all available locally. For the naturalist the Red Kite Trail is close to the town and slightly further afield are the nationally important wildfowl reserves of Mersehead and Caerlaverock.
