A Guide To Tain
25 Oct 2018Last but not least on our ten most beautiful towns in Scotland list is Tain. Located in Easter Ross, in the Highlands of Scotland, the town is the oldest royal burgh in Scotland, granted its royal charter in 1066 due to links with early Christian saint Duthac, whose shrine is located within the town’s Collegiate Church. The rich history has generated an array of interesting and unusual buildings including the parish church, Old Town Hall, the Royal Hotel and the museum, as well as a number of distinctive commercial properties built by Maitland architects in the late 19th century.
Tain Golf Club is a Championship links designed by Tom Morris. It boasts stunning views over the Dornoch Firth which can be enjoyed from the 19th hole, where players are encouraged to pause and enjoy a dram of Glenmorangie whisky, produced at the world-famous distillery nearby. The unparalleled views of the Dornoch Firth are best experienced from a viewpoint on the A836 (heading west towards Bonar Bridge and then taking the B9176 Struie Road) but the area as a whole is renowned for fantastic forests, spectacular cliffs beautiful beaches and peaceful lochs.
