Oban

Oban, also in Argyll and Bute, sits on the west coast of Scotland in a horseshoe-shaped bay. In fact, the name derives from the Gaelic for ‘little bay’. There is evidence of human occupation on the site dating back to the stone age, while nearby Dunollie castle dates to the early middle ages, but the modern town developed alongside the distillery which opened in 1794 and remains one of the top attractions with tours and tasters. There are stunning views towards the Hebrides from places like Pulpit Hill, an iron age hillfort, as well as the full range of sporting and outdoor activities you might expect in the Scottish Highlands, not forgetting sea safaris to see the local seal colonies and porpoises. A land-based exploration of the local sealife can be had at the Oban Sealife Centre
