The Auld Schoolhouse was originally built in 1791 as a water driven linen mill, it was converted in 1876 to accommodate the local schoolmaster. It has been refurbished to an exceptionally high standard but retains all of its original charms. The swift flowing Skyreburn, which once drove the water mill, runs the full length of the spacious mature and secluded garden which is enclosed and safe for children. The house is located on the edge of the Galloway Forest Park, nominated Britain's first Dark Skies Park, and only a 5 minute drive to historic Gatehouse of Fleet; A short walk leads to the nearby sandy, child friendly beach, and the quiet country road (used for access only) leads directly to the magnificent Galloway Hills. The house is also within easy reach of the Forestry Commission's 7 Stanes cycle routes.

'Fantastic location, ideal for spending time with friends staying at Cardoness. Had some great weather and plenty of kayaking and beach walks, plus a visit to the island from Carrick beach. We all did the fab zipwire at Laggan and, on the wet day, the banana ride and ringos at Loch Ken Activity Centre. Love the sound of the river and eating my breakfast on the steps. Sun beating down as I write this on the back steps' Falke Family, Crook of Devon, August 2015
'Lovely cottage and lovely comfy beds, plus the garden was awesome!' Lucy, Suffolk, August 2015
'Another great stay in our favourite holiday home! Weather not great but we didn't get wet. I'm sure we'll be back again for our 4th visit soon!' Karen and Rob, Manchester, June 2015

Auld Schoolhouse Reviews
4 star reviewLovely cottage, great value and ideal if you need space and have a pet. We had plenty of room to store bikes outside (We used a cover because of the weather), The garden is beautiful and the surrounding area is wonderful. A great holiday yet again, even with the mixed weather.Great to hear that you enjoyed your stay so much, it is a lovely relaxed house and we like the river running beside it. Hope to be able to help with your future plans.
4 star reviewExcellent house, plenty of room, dog friendly. Central heating was needed due to weather! File or information on appliances etc would be an asset, most on pieces of paper on walls, we couldn't use tv in living room until we found information on bookcase on day 2. We would definitely return again, in better weather. We're so pleased to hear that you enjoyed your stay at the Auld School House. Please do give the owners or Discover Scotland a call in future if you experience any problems and we'll do our best to get things sorted for you!
4 star reviewGreat place, had everything we needed and would love to have given it 5 stars but couldn't due to it being too hot! The central heating was on morning and night in the middle of summer and we couldn't turn it down or offMany thanks for your review. We're so pleased to hear how much you enjoyed The Auld School House. We will certainly take your comments regarding the heating to the owner.
Please do in future contact Discover Scotland with any issues you have whilst still on holiday. We are in regular contact with owners/caretakers and so can usually get these things sorted out so that you can enjoy the rest of your holiday.
