Barnacle - Southwick, Sandyhills
Holiday property description
Discover the breath taking scenery and wildlife that's typical of South West Scotland, with a stay at RSPB Mersehead Reserve. Stroll along the nature trails and use the viewing hides to explore at your own pace. Spring is particularly magical, when the wet meadows fill with lapwings and skylarks, not to mention butterflies and wild flowers. You might also see a roe deer. And in the autumn, thousands of barnacle and pink-footed geese start to arrive for the winter, creating a not-to-be-missed spectacle.
This pair of cosy semi-detached cottages are located in the heart of this renowned reserve which is a Visit Scotland 4 star wildlife experience, famous for its waterfowl. There are plentiful opportunities to explore the local area including the historic Sweetheart Abbey at nearby New Abbey, Caerlaverock Castle with its unusual triangular floor plan and Moat Brae in Dumfries, where J M Barrie wrote Peter Pan. Leisure pursuits in the area include plentiful golfing opportunities with the Southerness Links Championship course and many other 18 hole and 9 hole golf courses available nearby. The Forestry Commission 7Stanes Mountain Bike Trails are located throughout the region at Dalbeattie Forest and also in Dumfries at both Mabie & Ae Forests, a little further afield are the trails in the Galloway Forest Park (Britain's first designated Dark Sky Park). There are plethoras of walking opportunities including beach, cliff top, forest and for those who seek something more strenuous, hill walks. Course and sea fishing are readily available throughout the area.

'A smashing spot! Barnacle by the bedroom window in the morning. A challenging but good week's birding. Colvend Stores is astonishing in what it stocks.' Mr and Mrs A, April 2016
'What a wonderful cottage! Geese by day, Barn Owls by night. Magic! Thanks for the warm welcome, hoping to be back! Mr and Mrs Farrell, February 2016
'Our second stay here and we have hardly left the reserve, just enjoyed the walks, the hide and being nice and cosy in the gales! Some glorious days too and a walk under the stars on a clear night is magical. Colvend Store had everything we needed and the near hide had a phone signal! Cottage lovely and clean and we'll be back next year! Mr and Mrs Hemming, February 2016

5 star reviewThe cottage was way and above our expectations! Everything was clean and the cottage cosy. What we didn't expect was the provision of all cleaning materials, all Eco friendly too!
The main window created a luxury hide for the bird table across the road, which was well supplied with seed from the container in the kitchen, again provided.
We are already discussing when we will be visiting again.
Thank you for providing such a delightful holiday home.
5 star reviewThis is the 8th year I have gone to this cottage and have enjoyed every holiday. I am going again later in the year and will be going next year too. The staff are very helpful the only little thing for me is now my husband has passed away and I am on my own wifi would be nice to enable me to keep in touch with family. A special thank you to Eric and Rowena for their help. Wildlife brilliant badger, deer, mice and birds in the garden rabbits, hare, deer and birds round the reserve.
4 star reviewCosy, comfortable and well equipped cottage. Electric heating system not very efficient but living room very cosy when open fire lit. Great to wake up to sunrise through bedroom windows and see sunset through the living room window. Marvellous displays of Barnacle geese and other wildlife.
4 star reviewCustomer service excellent, fridge decided to freeze everything inside it, fridge replaced within 3 days. Views from cottage fantastic along with bird life. Only downside the damp in the walls in every room. Having said that look forward to staying again
4 star reviewLovely cottage, warm and welcoming. Perfect setting (and weather thank you). Everything we needed despite the temperamental fridge freezing all our food the first day!
Very well stocked shop close by came to our rescue and the fridge sorted itself out!
Would recommend Barnacle Cottage to anyone wanting an away from it all break, surrounded by wildlife. lovely.
4 star reviewLocation on bird reserve is perfect if you like quiet, immediate access to hides, countryside and huge empty beach with spectacular sunrises and sunsets.
Cottage warm cosy and comfortable. Well equipped. As per online description.
There were a few small maintenance jobs that needed doing to make it 5 star.Pleased to hear you enjoyed your stay at Barnacle! Some maintenance jobs are set to be comleted over the coming weeks so you should see a difference if you chose to book again.
5 star reviewNo complaints cottage very warm staff helpful this was the 3rd time I had stopped there and I have booked another two holidays for next year so must be good. Just wish they had wifi so I could communicate with family at home.
4 star reviewA nice comfortable cottage in a wonderful setting. We have stayed there several times and always enjoyed it. Fabulous place to stay if you like birds and other wildlife. Many thanks for your kind comments and lovely photos. Barnacle certainly is a popular property and, as lovers of Mersehead ourselves, we couldn't agree more with your opinion of the location!
5 star reviewThe location of this property, actually on the RSPB Reserve, really makes it, as does the surrounding area.
The Cottage is cosy & warm - we stayed at Easter - & the parking is fine. Love the pictures - paintings of birds & photographs of the surrounding area.
Only minor niggles - the clothes line had seen better days, as had the clothes-airer type drier which you need to use if the weather is inclement, & the glass shelf in the bathroom wasn't properly attached!
One other point, which maybe should have been made in the former section: I entirely understand why Discover Scotland is charging the returnable 'damages' deposit but it is quite a hefty sum, payable in advance, and it is slightly annoying to have to do this because of a few irresponsible people. It also makes you worry a little about anything happening when you are staying in a property - things do wear out & you don't want to be charged for something that isn't your fault!
However, all in all a fabulous holiday, as usual. We have been returning to Barnacle & Shelduck Cottages for a number of years now, so that speaks for itself!
