Holiday property description

The Buchan is a truly unique wilderness property in the heart of the Galloway forest, and we have a one off special!

Week commencing 23rd June NOW ONLY £669! That's a fabulous summer saving of 15% (Was £787)

An original wilderness property overlooking Loch Trool in the heart of the Galloway Forest Park, Britain's first designated 'Dark Sky Park', this historic hunting lodge provides modern, comfortable accommodation for up to 8 people who have a sense of adventure and enjoy getting away from it all.  Set in a remote, stunning location, it offers excellent opportunities for walking, cycling and general exploring, or you can simply relax in the large conservatory and enjoy the wonderful view and watch the birds. Being surrounded by mountains on clear nights the star-gazing is exceptional.

Once the Earl of Galloway's mountain retreat, The Buchan is 'off-grid' and offers life at a different pace.  It has no internet, television and limited mobile reception, although it does have a land line.  Its services are entirely reliant on nature, with its own hydro-electricity and water supplies, and there is full central heating and a wood burning stove.  Most of the time these are straightforward to operate with care and common sense, although during long periods of very dry or very cold weather power can be reduced.  There is a backup generator and LPG cooker, and the wood burner provides both heating and hot water, but a certain amount of initiative is required.  High powered appliances such as the dishwasher and washing machine may not be available.  The hot tub in the conservatory is very popular but does require patience and careful management.

There are over two acres of semi-enclosed private land with a small burn and pond.  Sheep, cattle and wildlife are all around so pets must be kept under strict control.

Buchan Reviews

Fabulous experience. Off the grid with the most beautiful views from the house and incredible, scenic countryside directly on your doorstep. The whole experience including the booking was friendly, easy and so prompt. We were all remarking how we want to come back every year till we all get old and grey. Sure the house has its issues but its completely off the grid in the middle of nowhere - if you wanted such complete luxury that you didn't have to do any work for it you wouldn't be able to sit opposite a mountain watching the stars overhead.

Absolutely stunning location, worth the long drive! Only thing that we didn't love was the electricity cutting out if too many things are being run and the hot tub not being quite hot enough. Apart from that, we want to go back!

The views were stunning in this breath taking hidden gem. The house was a delight even with some of the quirks. However the mice were a massive problem. Not only were they over every surface in the kitchen , they were in the bedrooms even visiting our beds as we slept. The bats were no better. They to liked to be in on the action too , visiting screaming teenage girls at 5 in the morning. I was so tired from all the nocturnal activities I even began to think Ant and Dec were in on it, but sadly no. The mice are why you have a 2 instead of the 5 I really wanted to give you.
Thanks for letting us know about the problem that you had with mice.  The Forest location does cause this to happen on occasion, however it may be that this year has encouraged them to come in more due to the damp and cool weather.  We will raise this with the owners in any event to see what prevention and control measures need to be improved or put in place. The same will be undertaken for the Bats although this may cause more difficulties as they are a protected species. We are very sorry to hear of your disturbed nights but do hope that it was still an enjoyable holiday.

The house and views are breath taking in an amazing part of the world. I could cope with the quirky cooker and the lights fusing everytime I switched on the kettle, I was even able to cope with the green water in the bath but there were mice and bats in the house, in the kitchen and in all the bedrooms. If it wasn't for the mice I would have given 5 stars.
Thanks for the feedback as you say it is a wilderness, off grid property in the middle of a forest.  As the electricity is from a small private hydro it is sometimes "difficult".  The water has been checked and all is working, if a problem like this occurs do let us know so that it can be resolved as soon as possible.  The location of the house in the middle of the forest does mean that sometimes other forest dwellers move in, the owner do regularly ask them to "leave"!  Sorry that they upset you.
