Burnbrae Byre - Castle Douglas
Holiday property description
Truly luxurious holiday accommodation in a tastefully converted byre retaining lots of character, set in a tranquil, rural location, but ideally located for all that the south west has to offer. The cottage, graded 4* by Visit Scotland is beautifully presented with hard wood floors and finishes throughout, including a wood-burning stove in the spacious living room, sumptuous Harrison beds particularly chosen for their quality and comfort, and fully equipped to make a superb holiday cottage. The courtyard garden to the rear of the cottage is fully enclosed with an outlook over the owners' adjoining garden to the fields and hills beyond, with a murmuring burn running along the boundary. It is a lovely place to sit and enjoy the scenery and visiting bird life.
Approximately two miles away and an easy 45 minute walk down the lane, lies the village of Crossmichael with a well-stocked village shop and pub. Alternatively, the busy market town of Castle Douglas, with its reputation as a 'Food Town', is a few minutes' drive away, with many fine independent retailers, as well as excellent coffee shops, restaurants and galleries.
On the outskirts of Castle Douglas, you will find The National Trust of Scotland's Threave Garden and estate and Threave Castle. Or find time to visit the beautiful artists' town of Kirkcudbright, with its busy harbour and MacLellan's Castle, as well as the National Trust's Broughton House, home of artist E.A. Hornel.
Scotland's fascinating culture and history can all be explored locally including the historic Caerlaverock Castle with its unusual triangular floor plan, Drumlanrig Castle, home of the Dukes of Buccleuch, and more modern sites including Moat Brae in Dumfries, where J M Barrie wrote Peter Pan.
The wonderful scenery can be savoured with walks or drives along Loch Ken and through the Galloway Forest Park which is a designated Dark Sky Park. Loch Ken also provides varied water sport activities including fishing, sailing and water skiing. Quiet lanes abound for cycling and walking with a circular route available nearby. Unspoilt and quiet beaches can be found close by, and younger visitors are well catered for with Cream o' Galloway at Gatehouse of Fleet and The Cocoa Bean Factory at Twynholm or for those brave enough, try one of Europe's longest zip-wires at Laggan Outdoor, near Gatehouse of Fleet. Course and sea fishing are readily available throughout the area along the stunning Solway coast which is a must to visit with wide open deserted beaches. In Autumn and Winter large numbers of barnacle geese arrive at the RSPB Mersehead Reserve on the Solway Coast giving an unrivalled chance to see these amazing birds and other winter visitors, and the Wildfowl & Wetlands Trust Centre at Caerlaverock, near Dumfries is also well worth a visit.
Golfing should not be forgotten with many local courses for all, including the challenging Links Championship course at Southerness.

Burnbrae Byre Reviews
5 star reviewThe cottage was excellent. Very well decorated and immaculately clean, the only small complaint, cups and saucers could have been provided, as the mugs were very large and there were only four. Thanks for taking the time to write this 5* review! We shall feedback your comments regarding the mugs to the owners.
Best wishes - The Discover Scotland Team.
5 star reviewFabulous cottage in good location. Top quality fixtures and fittings, in pristine condition. The owners were lovely and friendly and nothing was too much trouble........we will definitely be going back, wanted to book for Christmas this year, but some lucky people got there first.
4 star reviewGreat holiday destination and superb conversion. Quite private in a rural and very tranquil location. Fantastic views across the countryside and the neighbouring owners were very welcoming and friendly
