In search of somewhere for rest and relaxation? Interested in getting out and about? In either case you will find Kirkbride Old Steading is the ideal base. This cosy cottage is set in beautiful countryside halfway between the splendid independent shops of Castle Douglas, known locally as 'The Food Town' and the Artists Town of Kirkcudbright, with its busy harbour and fishing fleet.   In a peaceful though not remote location, easily accessed, and well situated for exploring Galloway's hills, forests and interesting coast on foot, on a bike or by car. There is an ample private garden, occasionally overlooked by sheep!

There are plentiful opportunities to explore the local area including the historic Broughton House & Garden in Kirkcudbright which is owned by the National Trust for Scotland.   Leisure pursuits in the area include plentiful golfing opportunities including 18 hole courses at Castle Douglas and Kirkcudbright with many other 18 hole and 9 hole golf courses available nearby including the  Links Championship course at Southerness. The Forestry Commission 7Stanes  Mountain Bike Trails are located throughout the region with the nearest being at Dalbeattie Forest about a 20 minute drive away a little further afield are the trails in the Galloway Forest Park (Britain's first designated Dark Sky Park). There are plethoras of walking opportunities within a short drive including beach, cliff top, forrest and for those who seek something more strenuous, hill walks.  Course and sea fishing are readily available throughout the area.

In autumn and winter large numbers of the Svalbard population of barnacle geese arrive at the RSPB Mersehead Reserve on the Solway Coast giving an unrivalled chance to see these amazing birds and other winter visitors - more information at : .  The Wildfowl & Wetlands Trust Centre at Caerlaverock, near Dumfries is also well worth a visit.

For the young at heart (and not so young) a visit to Cream O'Galloway should be considered with its adventure playground for all ages, farm tours, ice cream (you can have a go at making your own), pond dipping and wildlife walks are just a taster of what is available.  The Cocoa Bean Factory is a must for all young chocoholics, where chocolate workshops are held daily, indoor and outdoor play areas, a cafe and a shop are on offer. For older children and adults, Galloway Activity Centre offers many water based activities including Sailing and Kayaking, land based activities are also offered. Laggan Outdoor offers activities including one of the longest Zip Wires in Europe, Segway Adventure tours, Mountain Balling and Clay Pigeon Shooting to name a few.

"We have had a fantastic week and "Old Steadings" has provided a comfortable, spacious base. Went as far as Mull of Galloway, one day to Edinburgh the next.   Jessica (10) loved Cream O'Galloway, with its huge play area.   We loved the shell beach at Kippford, plus we had a great Scottish evening in KIrkcudbright.   Loved the area, intend to return.   Gadd Family, Lancashire.

The kids loved the bedrooms and the cooking facilities were well arranged.   Thank you very much for letting us stay here - we all enjoyed it very much.  Cameron Family, Edinburgh.

Another fantastic stay in this lovely house.   Caught the Arts & Crafts Trail in Kirkcudbright (recommended).   Also Cocoa Bean Factory for children and Mossyard beach (although the Dhoon beach still my favourite).   Hopefully back again next year.   Thanks.   Child Family Newcastle Upon Tyne.

We've had a lovely time, the cottages & garden are great.   Today (Friday) we followed the Art Trail in Kirkcudbright - great fun.   We liked the Castle Kennedy Gardens and the Wild Animal Park - we managed to stroke a Tapir!   Hoping to return some day.  Vickers Family, Durham

Kirkbride Old Steading Reviews

4 star review

There were some issues with the property, although the location was wonderful - absolute peace. Someone had used the shelf in the oven on the BBQ and not cleaned it. There was over use of cream cleaner, which left a dusty film on the bathroom washbasin, bath and other areas. When we tried to use the DVD player it kept saying "no disc" after we had put one in and the TV would not change from TV to AV. We checked with the instructions but could not get it to work. The twin beds in the larger room were noisy - springs - and are ready for replacement. None of these stopped us having a good holiday there.
Thank you for the feedback, the owners are tryihg to simplfy the workings of the TV, it is very good to hear that you still enjoyed your holiday as it is a lovely area.

5 star review

This is a cosy cottage, generously equipped, well prepared, very private with lovely garden but friendly neighbours near. The setting is so beautiful even the terrible weather in September could not spoil = even the heavy mists were magical! Many interesting places to visit - including wonderful bookshop in the Mill in Gatehouse.
You'll be pleased to hear the magical mists are still with us! Thank you for such a lovely review of Kirkbride Old Steading. It really is in a fantastic location and great for a family holiday (mists and all!)
