Lonsdale - Rockcliffe
Holiday property description
Lonsdale commands a superb position on the hillside above the popular seaside village of Rockcliffe giving outstanding views over the estuary to Rough Island Nature Reserve and Hestan Island. The house has a private setting with an attractive garden laid out over the hillside with rough rock garden paths among the varied plants and shrubs.
The house is furnished and equipped to a high standard to ensure a completely enjoyable stay. The spacious rooms have superb views of the estuary and the dining room has patio doors to a sun trap patio - whilst you may find you just want to sit and enjoy the seascape you should still make the effort to explore the wonderful local area!
Rockcliffe is an popular family holiday location with its safe beach and varied walks, be it round to Kippford for a pub lunch at one of the two water front hotels or to explore the rocky out crop of Castle Point and on via cliff top walks to Smugglers coves.
Kippford is a busy sailing centre and other outdoor activities are well catered for in the local area with Horse Riding, fishing of all sorts, golf of all sorts with a 9 hole course at Kippford, 18 holes at nearby Colvend and the Southerness links championship course only a few miles further on round the Solway coast. Wild life can be seen where ever you are with red squirrels in most areas and excellent bird watching at RSPB Mersehead reserve and also on the Red Kite trail near Loch Ken. For those looking for strenuous pursuits the Forestry Commission 7stanes trails are all easily accessible and the Dalbeattie woods trail is less than a 5 minute drive away.

"Spent 3 nights at Lonsdale Cottage, Rockcliffe with my wife and our 2 children and my parents and can't speak highly enough of the place! In terms of the booking - friendly, efficient communication from our first enquiry. As for the property itself, the (very) steep drive up is a small price to pay for the fabulous views. The house has been well designed to maximise the views from virtually every window and is bright and spacious. We were fortunate enough to have glorious weather so spent plenty of time on the patio but the house is sufficiently roomy that you would not feel claustrophobic if you were stuck indoors. Rooms are a decent size and beds and linen very comfortable. The house was spotlessly clean on arrival and very well equipped. Also plenty of useful information provided and good wifi. Very convenient to walk down into Rockcliffe and the 1mile walk along to Kippford was very pleasant. In short, we would not hesitate to recommend and are already planning our next visit!" "We know the area well, and have stayed in several houses nearby - this is definitely one of the best! The house was spotless and very well equipped. Our fitness levels certainly improved with the hill (this caused us no problems, but could be a possible issue for some). It was useful having the bike storage. We enjoyed the outstanding views from the terrace seating. I wish I had made more effort to keep the feeder topped up as I'm sure this would have encouraged the red squirrels to visit - only saw one this year! We will certainly return!" "We stayed for a long weekend with daughter, son in law and our two granddaughters who enjoyed the beach even in damp weather. This house is exceptional in size and comfort with wonderful views from all windows. The bonus for us was the layout with twin en suite room on the ground floor so the family had very spacious rooms upstairs. Also the large kitchen diner had comfy chair overlooking the patio so plenty of space for a quiet relax. It is well equipped with everything you could need with lovely comfy beds and also very clean throughout. The owners have decorated to a very high standard and are to be commended for their good taste. I can highly recommend Lonsdale to anyone wanting great quality self catering." Ann C, Oct 2014
