Rowantree Cottage - Skyreburn, Gatehouse Of Fleet
Holiday property description
This former gamekeeper's cottage, built in 1896, lies up a peaceful glen in the Galloway hills. Here you are away from traffic noise and street lights, and on a clear night see the stars.
The garden is a haven for birdlife and red squirrels . A short distance away are the many attractions of the area, with something to offer for all ages.
The tastefully modernised cottage has been refurbished to retain its original character and features, making it a comfortable family holiday home. It is approached from the Skyreburn road up a short track, through the field beside the cottage to a large fenced car parking area. The small Paradise burn is at the rear of the cottage, through a gate with a secure latch.
The beautiful Solway coast is just under three miles away, with superb beaches for swimming and watersports, and there are many golf courses to be enjoyed. Hill walking is on the doorstep and there are many hill lochs for fishing. Galloway Forest Park has the well known 7 stanes Mountain bike trails at Kirroughtree and is also a designated Dark Sky Park, while nearby Laggan Outdoor has one of the longest zipwires in Europe, and Cream of Galloway, makers of delicious ice cream, have an adventure playground for all ages among its many activities. Nearby Creetown, reached further up the Skyreburn road has the Gem Rock Museum.
Gatehouse of Fleet, 4 miles away, Kirkcudbright, the "artists' town", and Castle Douglas have excellent pubs and cafes, and are known for their food shops and galleries. There are also many interesting gardens and popular National Trust properties to visit.

'Good weather, good location & good house!' (The Beardie Family, stayed April 2017)
'Really enjoyed our stay in your lovely cottage. Spectacular scenery and peaceful. Enjoyed watching the birds and red squirrels feed. Thank you' The Burrells, July 2017
'Our first visit to this really lovely cottage, and we hope not our last. Thank you for sharing Rowantreetree: it is quiet, comfortable, cosy, well equipped, clean and is a glorious location. You can see the weather coming and there was plenty of it this week! Even so, we had lovely walks, enjoyed the wildlife and didn't get wet. The birds are well-fed and, although we haven't managed to attract any squirrels to the garden, we did meet one down the road amongst the hazel bushes. We also saw goldcrests in the trees by the paradise Burn' Mr & Mrs Voremburg, Sept 2017

Rowantree Cottage Reviews
4 star reviewGreat cottage. Had exactly what it said on the tin. Although there was an ongoing issue with the Broadband (which actually was mentioned in a review on the site, but after we had booked!) and so the promised WiFi was not available. It didn't actually spoil our holiday, but if people hadn't had another way of doing that, it could have.
The only issue I would say that there was that when we first arrived at the cottage, there was a REALLY bad smell of Dog. It made us think that next time we booked a cottage, we would consider booking one that didn't allow pets. Thanks for the 4* review, rural broadband seems to be becoming more of an issue and we will now highlight the problem that rural properties have with it so that guests are forewarned, unfortunately the speed and reliability is outside of the owners control. Very sorry to hear of the doggy smell, this will be investigated.
4 star reviewCottage was very good - spacious, clean and tidy. Garden was excellent, huge, and dog proof. Great to have a real fire to snuggle up in front of on the rainy day. The only let down was the wifi. We chose the cottage because it was advertised as having wifi but to all intents and purposes it didn't. Yes there was broadband to the cottage, but when it worked it was only 256k max, and it only worked for a couple of hours in the mornings - by lunchtime every day it had gone off completely. The cottage does have great O2 coverage, so if you only need data for your phone that works fine, but we had children with laptops so gaming in the evenings didn't happen.Very pleased to hear that you enjoyed the cottage so much, thank you for the review. WIFI is a problem in rural areas, often not superfast at all unfortunately. We will add a caution about this to the website as it is a common problem across all of Scotland.
