Powillimount Cottage is an idyllic traditional Galloway cottage surrounded by cornfields and only a 5 minute walk from a fabulous beach. Peace and quiet is assured with it's secluded location which boasts superb sea views over the Solway Firth to the Lake District hills, the Isle of Man, along the Colvend Coast to Southerness lighthouse and the Portling cliffs, there are also inland views to the areas outstanding land mark Criffel and the Waterloo Memorial at New Abbey. These latter two make good walks and there are also walks can be had from the back door over the Estate and not to me missed down onto Powillimount beach just 500 metres away. A slightly longer stroll which takes in the beach and leads you on to the village of Carsethorn with the Steamboat Inn where your efforts may be rewarded with really good food, it is also dog friendly and has outside seating on the water's edge, so that you can enjoy the views over the estuary.
Arbigland Estate is the ideal base for mountain biking, birdwatching, golf or collapsing and revelling in the amazing surroundings. The South Carse equestrian centre is close by so you can bring your horse with you and keep him in the livery yard tto allow you both to enjoy riding on the beach and around the bridleways on the estate. Local history in on the door step with the cottage that John Paul Jones, famous for being the founder of the American Navy was born on the Estate and now open as a museum to him, the Museum makes for an interesting visit.
The marvellous wildlife and birdwatching at the RSPB Mersehead Reserve just a few miles along the coast should not be missed. The reserve is particularly spectacular in winter with thousands of geese and other over wintering wildfowl present but in summer is also worth a visit with pleasant walks through the reserve woodlands down to the beach. During the winter the reserve also runs Badger Watching and other events.
Cycling and walking are particularly well catered for with numerous coastal walks and also Forestry Commission Woodlands including the 7Stanes Mountain Bike Routes which have been laid out in a number of the Forestry Commission properties across the region. The closest of these are at Dalbeattie and Mabie Woods both of which provide superb and spectacular settings for quiet walks or testing strenuous mountain biking routes. The famous Southerness Links golf course is close by, together with other less testing courses in the local area.
If you are looking to explore Scotland's culture and heritage you are spoilt for choice with numerous historic sites to explore including Sweetheart Abbey in New Abbey together with one of the oldest Corn Mills, also maintained by Historic Scotland. Connections with Burns can be explored in Dumfries and other villages including Ellisland Farm at Holywood where Burns farmed for a number of years.
