The wood burning stove in the sitting room makes a cosy area for relaxing after a day our exploring the local area.

Auchencairn itself is a peaceful picturesque village and Rafters is tucked away, up a quiet lane just off Church Road on the coast road (A711) from Dalbeattie to Kirkcudbright and is on the South West Coastal 300. The village is close to the Solway Firth coast at the head of the broad and sandy Auchencairn Bay whose entrance is guarded by Hestan Island. The welcoming and pretty village has lots of whitewashed cottages with many dating from the early 17th century; there is a well stocked village shop combined with tea room & post office) the village facilities include a garage, a vegan restaurant, bowling green, village hall, church, & community garden. There are also a few local craft and specialist businesses operating close by.

The local area is steeped in history and folklore providing a wealth of opportunities to investigate the culture and heritage of South Scotland. Rafters offers you a comfortable location to both relax and recharge and also explore the surrounding area, it’s stunning scenery and coastline. There’s something for everyone be it beach combing, walking, cycling, fishing, birdwatching, all within close proximity of the cottage. There are numerous golf courses and a few of the 7 stanes championship mountain bike trails within a short drive away.

Slightly further afield, but well worth a visit are attractions like Ellisland Farm, Holywood, Dumfries which was the home of Robert Burns whilst he was both farming and writing his poems and works, Threave Gardens and Castle at Castle Douglas and the Annandale Distillery at Annan which is the southernmost Distillery in Scotland and has been recently been renovated to its former condition and is now producing its own very special brand of whisky.

Wildlife and bird watching opportunities exist on the doorstep and at special reserves such as RSPB Mersehead at Southwick and Caerlaverock Wildlife & Wetlands Trust on the east side of the Nith Estuary. With the Solway coast on your doorstep, sea fishing opportunities abound. The Galloway Forest Park is worth visiting to enjoy the abundant wildlife or for the walking and mountain biking opportunities including the 7Stanes cycling routes, two of which are within easy reach at Dalbeattie Woods and Mabie Forest.
The cottage provides a wonderful cosy location from which to explore the local area for a memorable holiday.
