Overview
IDEAL FOR MULTI GENERATION FAMILY HOLIDAYS OR GROUPS OF FRIENDS TO GET TOGETHER
Set on a working farm, the building converted from a former Granary played a pivotal role in the organisation of Scotland’s Alternative Music Festival – The Wickerman, held annually within a natural ampitheatre on the owner’s farmland between 2001 and 2015, The iconic festival featured an eclectic mix of music from many legendary artists. The festival was named after the cult film The Wickerman which used numerous locations in the local area. Harbour Cottage in Kirkcudbright, Cally Estate Office in Gatehouse of Fleet, the river Cree at Newton Stewart to name a few are all within easy reach of The Wickerman Granary.
Recently refurbished, with tasteful Wickerman Festival memorbillia throughout the granary offers luxurious accommodation for 6. Fly fishing for Rainbow Trout for 2 rods on the nearby Lochan Pond and Fellcroft Loch is included on a catch and release basis, as is use of the owner’s tennis courts by prior arrangement and subject to availability.
In the local village is Dundrenann Abbey. A ruined Cistercian abbey where Mary Queen of Scots spent her last night in Scotland before being imprisoned in the Tower of London. The village also has a small tea room in the former village pub (check for seasonal opening hours). The Artists town of Kirkcudbright is a short drive away. Here you will find many interesting independent shops and art galleries hidden along its narrow closes. Broughton House and Garden, a National Trust for Scotland property are well worth a visit. Cream O' Galloway is within a 25-minute drive, not only do they produce organic ice cream and cheese with milk from their own dairy herd, but have several nature walks, and offer various cheese and ice cream making workshops throughout the year. Slightly further afield in Twynholm is The Cocoa Bean Factory where children can participate in chocolate workshops, there are also indoor & outdoor play areas. (The hot chocolate is a must!) For the more adventurous Galloway Activity Centre on Loch Ken offer land and water-based activities. For those who simply want to relax and enjoy the tranquil surroundings there are plenty of opportunities for walking, be it hill, cliff top or forest. Wildlife surrounds the farm; you can relax on the patio area and although not within the Dark Skies Park, star gazing is outstanding as there is very little light pollution. Sandy beaches are within easy reach at The Dhoon, Brighouse Bay, Carrick and Sandgreen.
