The West Highland Way
25 Oct 2018Beginning at Milngavie, the 154km (96m) West Highland Way follows the exquisite landscape of Loch Lomond towards Glencoe, climbing the famed Devil’s Staircase before finishing at Gordon Square, Fort William. The majority of the landscape during this source to sea walk along the West Highland Way is forest, woodland and trees along with a meandering, widening river. These are ancient, Caledonian pinewood forests which are well looked after and protected; their conservation status was “established at the Rio biodiversity world summit” which took place in 1992. This is due to the fact that a large number of plant and animal species rely on these protected Caledonian forests for their survival.
The West Highland Way runs close to many Historical sites and as you walk up the peaceful east side of Loch Lomond you can imagine the past challenges that both Robert Bruce and Rob Roy may have faced when taking shelter from their pursuers; the famous cave which is said to have been used by them both is close to the route. There are also various points along the West Highland Way where you can link to other paths such as the Great Trossachs Path at Inversnaid or a testing 6-hour walk from Bridge of Orchy to the tops of Beinn Dorain & Beinn a Dothaidh, and back again.
