7 Stanes Mountain Biking Accommodation

7 Stanes, over 400km of biking heaven right here in southern Scotland based across 7 trail centres at Ae, Mabie, Kirroughtree, Glentrool, Dalbeattie, Newcastleton and Innerleithen. The name actually comes from the Scottish word for stone, ‘Stane’, and at each location you’ll find a unique stone sculpture. Check out our selection of holiday cottages, each a short drive to one or more 7 Stanes centres and nearly all with safe, bicycle storage.

These purpose built trails are graded by difficulty, in a similar way to ski runs, and offer some of the best mountain biking in the UK. No need to try just the one, with all trails in relatively close proximity to each other, how about trying multiple or even all 7 during your break – Ae, Mabie, Kirroughtree, Glentrool and Dalbeattie in particular, are all within approximately 60 miles of each other.

Mountain Biking Trail Grades

7 Stanes use the Cyclists’ Touring Club off-road trail grades with trails graded into 6 different categories:

  • Green: Easy
  • Blue: Moderate
  • Red: Difficult
  • Black: Severe
  • Orange: Bike park
  • Forest road & similar

Check this out handy guide from Forestry and Land Scotland for more information on mountain biking trail grades.
