Gardeners Cottage offers a perfectly positioned retreat on the outskirts of the picturesque coastal village of Auchencairn. Nestled in a peaceful rural setting with views across farmland to the Solway Firth in the south and Screel Hill to the north, there is no sight or sound of traffic, only of birds and the occasional deer. This is the perfect haven for families, friends, writers, and artists seeking inspiration and relaxation in the heart of Dumfries and Galloway. Whether you’re looking to unwind from the demands of daily life or spark creativity in a tranquil environment, Gardeners Cottage offers a truly rejuvenating getaway.

The cottage interior has been cleverly converted to provide a flexible living space. The south end, or ‘day room’, has an open play/activity area, with toys, electric organ and collapsible table tennis table, or space for such as yoga mats or painting easels. Adjacent to this is a dining area with a large table seating 8-10 people, and a well equipped open kitchen. There are doors straight into the garden from this room. Meanwhile, the north end, buffered by a short corridor and bathroom, comprises a quiet sitting room with comfortable chairs, sofas, writing desk and open fire.

There is currently no TV, only a wi-fi hub with internet speeds averaging 2.2 Mbps download and 1.7 Mbps upload.

The four bedrooms above, serviced by two shower rooms and toilets, are large, despite being heavily coombed, with large Velux windows giving enticing views into the surrounding woods. For anyone unable to climb the stairs, there is a downstairs sofa bed and bathroom - see below.

Outside, the large private garden is a total delight! It comprises what was once the rockery of the nearby baronial mansion, constructed in the late 19th century, plus an open grass area with site for an open fire, a children’s play house, and stunning views. There is also a patio area for sipping your morning coffee as the sun rises, or dining al fresco on a warm evening. The property is just a short walk from the sea and secluded beaches, allowing guests to easily embrace the beauty of the Solway Coast. Whether you’re keen on walking, cycling, kayaking, sea fishing, or even joining a guided walk to Hestan Island, adventure and discovery are right on your doorstep.

Beyond the cottage, the surrounding area offers a wealth of experiences. Explore the charming artists’ town of Kirkcudbright, steeped in history and culture, or visit Castle Douglas, a haven for food lovers with its independent shops and local delicacies. With stunning walking and off-road cycling trails, abundant wildlife, and breathtaking coastal scenery all within easy reach, Gardeners Cottage is the ideal base for exploring the very best of southwest Scotland. Whether you seek outdoor adventure, cultural discovery, or a peaceful retreat, this enchanting home near Auchencairn promises an unforgettable stay.
