Oban is often described as the Gateway to the Highlands and Islands and offers easy access to tourist hotspots like Fort William, Ben Nevis and Glencoe, not to mention several Inner Hebridean islands like Mull, Islay and Jura. The town is also renowned for its seafood, with several high quality restaurants along the high street. If you're more a fan of watching your sea life than eating it, whale watching tours leave the harbourside regularly throughout the day and the Scottish Sealife Sanctuary, located just outside at Barcaldine, houses an array of rescued marine animals including otters and seal pups.
Walking and hiking is readily available, with 20 Munros within 45 minutes of Oban and less strenuous, but not less invigorating walks like Glasdrum and Glen Nant woods, the Jubilee Bridge and Stalker Castle path and Bridge Over the Atlantic circuit all close to hand. Golf and fishing enthusiasts won't be disappointed either with the local course only 4 miles away and fishing available at Scammadale.
